The Birds by Toikka collection intertwines Oiva Toikka's (1939-2019) profound love for nature with his passion for glass art. The collection combines traditional glassmaking techniques with Toikka's hands-on approach, honed through his close collaboration with skilled artisans, especially during his time at the Nuutajärvi Glassworks. Often found in the hot shop, working alongside master glassblowers, Toikka drew inspiration from his iconic pop-inspired vases of the era to create Kiikkuri, the first technically demanding large bird in his repertoire. Kiikkuri, based on the archival bird shape, now emerges in beautiful new colours that add to its allure. Limited to 1000 numbered pieces, each bird in this collection becomes a treasured and cherished gift.

Birds by Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the greatest names in Finnish design. His iconic collection of Birds by Toikka first took flight back in 1972 at the Nuutajärvi glass factory with the creation of his small glass Flycatchers. Since then hundreds of new birds have joined the flock. The collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and would not have been possible without Toikka’s hands-on-approach at the glassworks and his keen understanding of each employee’s skills. Today, each glass bird is handcrafted and mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory.

Oiva Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the great personas of Finnish glass design. His imaginative, rich and bold glass art is a departure from mainstream Nordic design. Toikka’s individual style is also evident in the utility objects he creates as they often deviate from the traditional clean-lined puritanism of Finnish design aesthetics. In addition to glass, his artistic activities cover staging, fashion design and plastic interior design elements.
