Oiva Toikka

A legend of Nordic design, Kaj Franck believed in practicality. His now iconic designs are multi-functional and versatile so that each item has multiple uses. Many of Franck’s designs derive from three simple forms: circle, square and rectangle. Functional, durable and refined, Franck believed it was what one did with his pieces that made them theirs. Guided by his desire to seek the essential, Kartio features perfectly balanced, timeless pieces that have become iconic symbols of Nordic design. The Kartio pitcher now comes in a new dark grey that adds elegant detail to any setting. Mouthblown in Finland. Perfect for serving cold beverages. A great gift idea. Hand wash recommended.

Kartio

Known as the conscience of Finnish design, Kaj Frank sought to remove excess in his work leaving only the essentials. In 1958, Franck realized his goal with the Kartio glass, which captured the perfect balance between material and geometric form. Simple, yet durable enough for everyday use, Franck mastered the creation of the basic drinking glass, which is a legendary design beyond any trend. The wide and versatile colour palette of Kartio perfectly represents Iittala’s knowledge of coloured glass.

Oiva Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the great personas of Finnish glass design. His imaginative, rich and bold glass art is a departure from mainstream Nordic design. Toikka’s individual style is also evident in the utility objects he creates as they often deviate from the traditional clean-lined puritanism of Finnish design aesthetics. In addition to glass, his artistic activities cover staging, fashion design and plastic interior design elements.

Toikka has gained a solid international reputation throughout his prolific career, which dates back to the 1950s, having worked with well-known designers and artists both in Finland and abroad. He has won several prestigious awards including the Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal. In 1993, Toikka was given the honorary title of Professor of the Arts by the state of Finland. Birds by Toikka, a series designed for Iittala combines the artist’s limitless imagination with his expertise in the characteristics of glass. The unique and colorful birds, which are all handmade, have become the passion of collector’s worldwide.
