The new Moominpappa and Hemulen sets invite you to explore the miracles of Northern nature, complementing the beloved Moomin by Arabia Classics collection with new themes added every year. Mug, bowl, and plate are available separately from each set. The new classics have a timeless design by Kaj Franck’s Teema series.
On the charmingly grey dishes, Moominpappa is making preparations to the Moominhouse for the winter to ensure that the family stays warm during their annual hibernation. The cold stays outside and the warm inside as long as there’s enough firewood and the windows are insulated with boards. This year, Moominmamma has decided that the family will sleep in their own beds and not among the hay, which has been the tradition.
The deliciously yellow dishes feature Hemulen, who makes a return to the Classics Collection after a ten-year break. For Hemulen, there’s no such plant that wouldn’t awaken the collector’s sense in him. The illustrations are based on the book ‘Finn Family Moomintroll’, written and illustrated by Tove Jansson. In the story, Hemulen travels to Hattifattener’s island where he finds astonishingly rare plants – a great addition to his botanical collection. On the backside of the mug and bowl, Hemulen is building a campfire from branches in order to dry his dress that got soaked in the rain.
The Moomins remind us of the importance being together, celebrating and stealing some time for ourselves. With Moomin by Arabia, we can slow down the world around us and escape our busy lives into small Mooments of Magic, every day. The Moomin Classics collection introduces the characters and their traits with beautiful artwork. It contains a mug, a bowl, and a plate for each character. The tableware is based on the classic Teema shape by Kaj Franck.
Tove Slotte
Tove Slotte has designed Moomin mugs already for over 30 years. Her love for Moomin philosophy is as endless as her inspiration for the Moomin stories behind her illustrations. During the autumn 2022, however, the beloved artist will slowly start to reduce work hours and retire from daily design work. Her creativity though, is here to stay.
Moomins are turned from stories to ceramic illustrations by designer Tove Slotte. Slotte (born in 1957) is Karjalohja-based Finnish illustrator and graphic designer whose original background lies in ceramics making and design. Tove Slotte was working for Arabia in 1985-1993 and after that she has been working as a freelancer, especially tight with Moomin by Arabia’s beloved designs.
Tove Slotte has designed over 100 Moomin mugs so far, the latest one being a season mug for winter 2022, ”Winter Wonders”. Even though the soon-to-be retirement, in the coming years we are still able to enjoy her last illustrations for Moomin by Arabia as the design work is usually done years before the launch.
From professional point of view Slotte can say farewell to Moomin illustrations with a confident heart as her work will be continued by the younger generation of creative powers. Moomin by Arabia’s own team consisting of two persons, Design Team Lead Annika Tickle and Illustrator Parvati Pillai are now taking over most of the design work at Moomin by Arabia, located in Fiskars Group’s headquarters at Keilaniemi.
