Designed by Timo Sarpaneva, Claritas is a deceptively simple loooking glass object that belies the demanding glass technique behind its creation. Each piece is a unique work of art requiring master glass blowers and grinding specialists’ expertise in knowing how to realize optical properties within layers of coloured and clear glass mass. The layered glass creates special optical perspectives that make the patterns and sculptural forms inside the glass appear to change depending on the angle the piece is viewed from. While many complex techniques go into making a Claritas vase, the most essential idea is Sarpaneva’s interpretation of an old steam blowing method. This is used to create the eye-like lenses to the objects. Claritas art pieces are shaped without using moulds. Instead, a single piece is built layer by layer by a master glass blower. Once formed, the hot glass is cooled down very slowly to release the tension out of the thick object. Once its properly cooled, its polished to its final form. The entire process is only possible with the full cooperation of the most skilled glass experts. Inspired by the original shades of Sarpaneva’s i-glass, Iittala now introduces two new coloured pieces to the Claritas series in moss green and rain (150mm). Mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland.
