Psychology of colour

Iittala is known around the world for its expertise as a producer of coloured glass. We have over 100 years of experience in producing this type of glass and are committed to further developing our capabilities in this area. Getting the most out of glass and developing an extensive colour palette calls for a thorough understanding of the materials used and a willingness to experiment. Colour know-how is part of the heritage of our glassworks.

Since the early days of modernism in the 1930s and 1940s, the artists working at Iittala’s glassworks have designed pieces that have challenged the skills and capabilities of the craftsmen there and the techniques they use.

Blue is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, confidence, intelligence and truth.

Red strikes a chord with more cultures than many other colors because of its intensity, passion and invocation of an inherent physiological response. Red is the color of celebration and good luck (China), purity and integrity (India), and mourning (South Africa).

Red is associated with energy and power, as well as passion and love.

Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. In contemporary culture red is the color of romantic love.

Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest.

Yellow and orange are the colors of sunshine. They are associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.

Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often associated with food. Bright, pure yellow is an attention getter, which is the reason taxicabs are painted this color. When overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect; it is known that babies cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning.

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, happiness, creativity, determination, and success.

Green is a color that soothes the eyes and produces a calming effect when seen. It’s also the color of spring, a time of rebirth and renewal.

Green symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility.

Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Green has strong emotional correspondence-with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.

Green says "nature", which explains why it is such a powerful symbol in the eco-friendly movement, as well as "initiative" and "wealth", but just as it symbols good, the extremes of green are considered to be bad as in “green with envy” or its association with money which is sometimes deemed as “the root of all evil.”
