Design legend Oiva Toikka’s iconic collection of Iittala glass birds took flight in 1972. Combining Toikka’s passion for nature and for blown glass art, each bird has its own personality making it a one of a kind art object. Handmade and mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory, the collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and Toikka’s partnership with his master craftsmen. Birds by Toikka Ruby Bird is the center of attention wherever she lands. Her regal shape is accentuated with a translucent glass in a rich red colour dotted with lustrous spots that pick up light brilliantly.
Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the greatest names in Finnish design. His iconic collection of Birds by Toikka first took flight back in 1972 at the Nuutajärvi glass factory with the creation of his small glass Flycatchers. Since then hundreds of new birds have joined the flock. The collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and would not have been possible without Toikka’s hands-on-approach at the glassworks and his keen understanding of each employee’s skills. Today, each glass bird is handcrafted and mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory.

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the great personas of Finnish glass design. His imaginative, rich and bold glass art is a departure from mainstream Nordic design. Toikka’s individual style is also evident in the utility objects he creates as they often deviate from the traditional clean-lined puritanism of Finnish design aesthetics. In addition to glass, his artistic activities cover staging, fashion design and plastic interior design elements.
