Iittala Alvar Aalto 90v anniversary

Six creative cities. Six unique colours.

Coming soon: Limited, numbered edition Aalto 90 City Vase Collection

Celebrating the 90th anniversary of Alvar Aalto’s iconic form, the Aalto 90 City Vase collection reinterprets the design through the essence of six creative cities: Helsinki, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, New York and Berlin. Known for travelling for both business and pleasure, Alvar Aalto drew inspiration for his work from around the world.

Like cities, the Aalto vase evolves in time but is not bound by it, making each piece a unique expression of design heritage and contemporary creativity.

The new glow

Each vase features an iridescent lustre finish, created during the hot-working stage of glassmaking. Once cooled, the glass surface reflects light enchantingly, giving the vase a festive, modern character.

Art meets Aalto

For the Aalto 90 anniversary year, Iittala invites contemporary artists to reinterpret the iconic Aalto vase through their own creative lens.

The first collaboration features Helsinki-based visual artist Irene Suosalo, known for her distinctive animation and video art that blend retro aesthetics with experimental techniques. Named Finland’s Illustrator of the Year in 2022, Suosalo has worked with global brands such as Bottega Veneta, Burberry, The New York Times and Bloomberg, and her work has been exhibited widely across Europe.

As a part of the anniversary collaboration, Suosalo has interpreted the City Vases through her art, bringing the iconic form into the digital age. Each city has it’s unique video piece, inspired by the glowing Lystre effect and the creative energy of each city. The movement captures the essence of molten glass, with magma-like pulsation refined with Suosalo’s signature glitches and retro aestethic.
