Iittala Arnica

Vase 140mm clear

Clear

The melting ice of the north, sculpted in glass. As the epitome of Finnish craftsmanship, the Arnica vases, designed by Tapio Wirkkala, have been revived from Iittala's archives. Wirkkala originally designed the Arnica in 1974. The vase is mouth-blown at the Iittala glass factory in Finland and is signed with the designer’s initials and the year of manufacture. The wide shape of the 140 mm high vase makes it perfect for a variety of flowers and branches, which accentuate the vase's vibrant surface.

Arnica

When the ice begins to melt after a long winter, it flows across the snow-covered land with a steady ebb and flow. Inspired by the melting ice of Lapland’s far north, Tapio Wirkkala created many awe-inspiring designs, including the Arnica vases, now available in this special edition. Arnica vases come in two sizes and are handcrafted and mouth-blown at the Iittala glass factory in Finland.

Iittala's designer Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a multitalented design genius, widely considered a leading figure of modern Finnish industrial art. Wirkkala's wide ranging portfolio spans from glass, furniture and product design to sculpture, city planning, art, graphics and even creating banknotes for the Finnish treasury. As his reputation grew internationally, Wirkala exhibited throughout the world but he was a recluse by nature. His favorite place was a spot so remote within the deep woodlands of middle Finland that helicopters delivered prototypes to his hut since no car could reach him. It was in nature that he found his much loved solitude and the inspiration for forms that industry could produce or artwork could create. Throughout his incredibly productive career, Wirkkala received numerous awards including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal. Wirkkala has designed a range of home products for Iittala with his Chanterelle, Gaissa, Ultima Thule and Tapio Collections.
