Introducing a new, extremely rare species to the Birds by Toikka flock: Kiikkuri resting in linen. Designed by one of the greatest names in Finnish design and glass art, Oiva Toikka, the resting Kiikkuri is a big personality, yet the linen shade gives the sculptural piece a natural calmness and soft appearance. A vivid, copper-brown tail part emphasises its presence, making it impossible to miss. The rare, resting version is one of Toikka's first and largest birds, and the design is an original size from the early 1970's. Mouth-blown and hand-crafted at the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland, the Kiikkuri form requires extra technical skill and effort from several glassblowers over the process

Birds by Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the greatest names in Finnish design. His iconic collection of Birds by Toikka first took flight back in 1972 at the Nuutajärvi glass factory with the creation of his small glass Flycatchers. Since then hundreds of new birds have joined the flock. The collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and would not have been possible without Toikka’s hands-on-approach at the glassworks and his keen understanding of each employee’s skills. Today, each glass bird is handcrafted and mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory.

Oiva Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the great personas of Finnish glass design. His imaginative, rich and bold glass art is a departure from mainstream Nordic design. Toikka’s individual style is also evident in the utility objects he creates as they often deviate from the traditional clean-lined puritanism of Finnish design aesthetics. In addition to glass, his artistic activities cover staging, fashion design and plastic interior design elements.

Toikka has designed a range of home products for Iittala with his Annual Cube, Birds by Toikka, Frutta, Flora, Kastehelmi, Oiva Toikka Collection and Tundra Collections.
